Formation of carbon alloys by low-energy ion doping and its application for adsorptive desulfurization

Shimoyama, Iwao

Hoshasen To Sangyo, (141), p.7 - 11, 2016/12

Desulfurization is an indispensable process on hydrogen formation from fossil fuel. Adsorptive desulfurization, alternative to conventional hydrogenation desulfurization, requires development of stable activated carbon adsorbents with high performance. I study dopant dependence on thiophene adsorption for carbon alloys prepared by heteroatom doping using low-energy ion beam. I doped nitrogen and phosphorus as dopants of group 15 elements in graphite surfaces, and clarified that phosphorus is superior in thiophene adsorption to nitrogen, and that the effect of phosphorus is higher with room temperature doping than with high temperature doping by about 10 times. X-ray absorption spectroscopy indicated that local structures around phosphorus sites were different between them. I attribute the high adsorption property to formation of curved phosphorus sites prepared by room temperature doping. Above results suggest that the property of carbon alloy can be controlled by low-energy ion beam.

Research and application of positronium chemistry

Hirade, Tetsuya

Hoshasen To Sangyo, (139), p.23 - 28, 2015/12

The researches and the applications of the Positronium Chemistry were introduced. The mechanism of Ps formation in low temperature insulators was clarified by Hirade and it is almost the end of the long, more than half century, period for arguments on Ps formation. Hence almost all of the researchers have been accepting the Spur Reaction Model proposed by Mogensen. Therefore, radiation chemistry researches by use of the Spur Reaction Model, especially the study of excess electrons at the time range of pico-to-nano second and electron mobility, were introduced. It was also introduced that the Free Volume Model is not correct and then the sub-nano meter vacant space, such as the microscopic free volume in polymers, can be studied by just the triplet Ps lifetime. As the latest research for the application, it was introduced that Ps bubble shows oscillation especially in ionic liquids and is expected to be a strong tool to investigate nano-scale properties of ionic liquids.

The Introduction to database of radiation resistance on polymer materials and equipment

Shimada, Akihiko

Hoshasen To Sangyo, (136), p.33 - 35, 2014/06

Recovery from the accident at Tokyo Electric Power Company Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is a matter of great urgency. In order to realize safe and secure operation for decontamination and decommissioning of NPP, it is indispensable to use equipments with sufficient radiation resistance (RR). In JAEA as well as other agency, various studies on RR of various materials and equipments have been conducted and a number of reports and papers have been published. Then, we started construction of a database named as "Database of Radiation Resistance on Polymer Materials and Equipments" and announced this database in a press release on June 1, 2012. At present, the database includes 878 data of materials, which are consisted of 423 data of polymer materials, 223 data of equipments and parts, 103 data of oils, fats and paintcoatings and 129 data of organic composite materials. The database will be extended and expected to be utilized for safe and secure operation.
